What it looks like?

(Picture to come)

What is it?

Comes from same plant as black pepper where it is left on the vine to fully ripen. Once the outer skin is rubbed off, the gray peppercorn underneath is left in the sun to dry until it turns white.

White Pepper does not have a strong smell like black pepper. It also has a reduced spiciness but the flavor increases.

Health benefits?

White Pepper is used as a digestive aid and provides relief from bloating, indigestion and nausea. It’s also low in sodium content so it’s great for people trying to stick to a low sodium diet.

How to use it?

White Pepper can be used to season anything. A lot of times it’s used to preserve the appearance of food. For example, if you are serving a white cream sauce and don’t want the traditional black flecks of pepper showing you can use white pepper in it’s place.

White pepper is especially good when used with veggies, sauces, marinades, salad dressings, shrimp and fish.

VC&C thoughts:

The first time I used White Pepper was to make my husband scallops. I was tempted to just use black pepper but I’m sure glad I didn’t.

White Pepper has become one of my favorite spices to use ever since I first tried it a little over a year ago. To me, it has a very distinct taste and adds a really nice flavor to a lot of the dishes I make.

Most recently I used it in risotto and it was amazing!
