What is it Wednesday? – Lentils

What it looks like?

What is it?

Lentils are legumes (plants whose seeds develop inside pods). They are believed to be originated in the Near East.

Lentils are a very nutritious food. The only legumes (including beans) that are higher in protein than lentils is the soybean.

Health benefits?

Lentils are high in protein and a good vegetable source of iron. They also contain dietary fiber, vitamin B, folate and minerals.

How to use it?

On their own lentils don’t have a strong flavor so they will absorb the flavors af the spices you are cooking with.

Lentils are small and absorbent so they don’t have to soak prior to cooking.

Lentils can be used in a lot of dishes. The most common uses are in soups, stews, and Indian dishes.

VC&C thoughts:

I honestly didn’t know that lentils had so much nutritional value. I have a hard time getting protein in my diet and since lentils have a lot of it I’m going to make some lentil dishes that I can eat for lunch.

I’m excited to try these babies out!
